Send Secure E-Mail from
Linux and Apple's Mac with Portable PGP
The free and open source program Portable PGP (in April 2010, the current
version is 1.0.6) is listed here as a courtesy for users who have
- an Apple OSX (tested with OS 10.5 and 10.6, but maybe
works also with earlier versions 10.x), or
- a Linux computer
and who like InstantCrypt's approach: simple encryption for casual users. Some
functions, such as installation or connecting with your e-mail, maybe more
difficult than with InstantCrypt, others may be easier. Portable PGP can
exchange encrypted messages with InstantCrypt. More information is on Portable
PGP's website:
http://ppgp.sourceforge.net/
No warranty or liability:
PortablePGP was not developed by InstantCrypt and is
shown here as a courtesy only. Of course, InstantCrypt thinks it
works, but InstantCrypt and its creators can take no legal
liability for the correct installation or working of the program or
for possible damages on your computer that may be a result. InstantCrypt
performed no tests for viruses and other malware.
Instructions: Find here
instructions for Apple and Linux.
How to run Portable PGP on Apple's Mac (OS
10.5/10.6, maybe earlier)
No warranty or liability:
InstantCrypt and its creators accept no legal liability for the
correct working of this installation, but it worked on my neighbor's computer.
(We can guarantee, however, that the download below does not contain viruses,
adware, or other malware.)
System Requirements:
- An Apple Mac OS X (that is, OS 10.x; tested on 10.5 (Leopard) and 10.6
(Snow Leopard)). May also work with earlier OS X operating systems,
but that is just speculation.
- Two Java components on your computer, installed in the default folders
(if you updated your computer regularly, they should be there):
- Java Runtime Environment 6 (or greater), and
- Java(TM) Cryptography Extension (JCE) Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction
Policy Files.
Installation:
- Create a folder named "PortablePGP" (without the quotation marks) in your
"Documents" directory. (If you want to install Portable PGP into a
different folder, see Hint below.)
- (a) Download the
file "PortablePGP-1.0.6.zip" from http://ppgp.sourceforge.net.
(b) After the download, doubleclick on the file PortablePGP-1.0.6.zip in
your computer. A folder PortablePGP-1.0.6 will be created.
(c) With the mouse, drag the contents of this folder into the folder
PortablePGP.
- (a) In addition
you need a start-up file. This start-up file (written by my neighbor David
- thank you, David!) and a file with further instructions are packed into a
zip file. Download the file with this button:
(b) After the download, doubleclick on the file Start_PortablePGP_OSX.zip
created in your computer. A folder Start_PortablePGP_OSX will be
created.
(c) With the mouse, drag the contents of this folder
("Start_PortablePGP_OSX.terminal" and "Instructions_OSX.txt") into the
folder PortablePGP.
(d) If Apple changes the name to "Start_PortablePGP_OSX.terminal.xml", you
need to remove ".xml".
Done! Doubleclicking on
"Start_PortablePGP_OSX.terminal" will start Portable PGP. You will find more
instructions in Instructions_OSX.txt.
Hint: If you installed Portable PGP
in another folder, you can make it work this way: Edit the script contained in
"Start_PortablePGP_OSX.terminal" and replace the term
"~/Documents/PortablePGP/PortablePGP.jar" with the path to the file
PortablePGP.jar used in your installation.
How to run Portable PGP on Linux
No warranty or liability:
InstantCrypt and its creators accept no legal liability for the
correct working of this installation, (We can guarantee, however, that the
download below does not contain viruses, adware, or other malware.)
System Requirements: See above
The program's web page says that PortablePGP works
on Linux, provided you have the two Java components mentioned in the above
section for Apple. (I have not tested this.)
Installation:
- Download Download the file "PortablePGP-1.0.6.zip" from http://ppgp.sourceforge.net. Portable PGP's website
says that it works on Linux. As a Linux user you know where to install it
and how to start it.
- If you are interested in more detailed user's instructions for Portable
PGP itself, you can download Start_Portable_OSX.zip above by clicking on
the button "Download Start_PortablePGP_OSX.zip" in the Apple section above.
The downloaded zip file contains a file "Instructions_OSX.txt", which
includes instructions for PortablePGP not limited to Apple computers.
